Synopsis

After his wife's death, Nantucket professor David Lewis retreats into an imagined relationship with her ghost, leaving their teenage daughter Rachel emotionally stranded. During the weekend marking the anniversary of Gillian's death, David's in-laws arrive with a potential new companion for him. Their intervention forces father and daughter to confront grief, resentment, and the difficult possibility of moving forward.

• The film adapts Michael Brady's 1984 stage play of the same name. David E. Kelley wrote the screenplay and also served as a producer.

• Although Nantucket provides the story's setting, production used several locations. Filming took place on Nantucket and around Wilmington, North Carolina, while some beach material was shot in Long Beach, California, and the sailing accident sequence was filmed in Marina del Rey.

• The geographic differences between the locations were noticeable enough to draw critical comment, particularly in scenes intended to represent the same coastal environment.

• James Horner composed the original score, with Tim Suhrstedt serving as cinematographer.
