Synopsis

During the Guadalcanal campaign of World War II, a company of American soldiers battles Japanese forces while struggling with fear, exhaustion, ambition, and moral uncertainty. Their advance through the island's jungle becomes a meditation on violence, mortality, nature, and the fragile bonds between men. Rather than focusing on one conventional hero, the film moves among several soldiers and officers, presenting war as both a physical ordeal and a spiritual crisis.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film is the second screen adaptation of James Jones' 1962 novel, which drew heavily on Jones' own combat experience during the Guadalcanal campaign.

• Its production marked the filmmaker's return to feature filmmaking after a 20-year absence. The previous feature had been released in 1978.

• Principal photography included approximately 100 days in Queensland, Australia, 24 days in the Solomon Islands, and three days in the United States. Queensland's Daintree rainforest provided much of the jungle setting.

• The first assembled edit reportedly ran about five hours. Several performers who had filmed scenes were ultimately removed or substantially reduced, including Adrien Brody, whose role was far smaller in the finished film than expected.

• Billy Bob Thornton recorded an extended narration during post-production, but none of that narration appears in the final version. The completed film instead uses multiple character voice-overs.

• The film received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, Sound, and Director.

• It won the Golden Bear at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival.

• The Criterion Collection released a restored edition in 2010 with a high-definition transfer supervised and approved by the cinematographer and filmmaker.
