Synopsis

New York social worker Nina Borowski becomes pregnant by her boyfriend, Vince, but their relationship quickly falls apart. She turns to George Hanson, her gay friend and new roommate, for support. As Nina imagines raising the baby with George, her affection deepens into romantic love, forcing both friends to confront the limits of their relationship and what family can mean.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film adapts Stephen McCauley's novel, with the screenplay written by Wendy Wasserstein. Wasserstein described her work as a free cinematic adaptation rather than a strict retelling.

• Principal photography took place in New York City and nearby Long Island from June 2 to August 4, 1997. Locations included Central Park Zoo, Coney Island, Greenwich Village, and the Ethical Culture School.

• Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were initially attached to play Nina and George. Winona Ryder also turned down the role of Nina.

• Stephen Baldwin was replaced by John Pankow after one day of filming because of creative differences.

• During an auditorium scene, Allison Janney disguised herself as a bearded male extra as a prank on the production. The prank was not recognized, and the footage remained in the finished film.

• A longer kiss between two men was removed before the theatrical release.

• Released by 20th Century Fox on April 17, 1998, the film earned approximately $46.9 million worldwide against a reported $15 million budget.
