Synopsis

During the cholera epidemic that sweeps Provence in 1832, Italian patriot Angelo Pardi flees Austrian agents while trying to deliver funds to the resistance. His journey brings him together with Pauline de Theus, a determined Frenchwoman searching for her missing husband. As quarantine, frightened mobs, and political violence close in, Angelo and Pauline cross the devastated countryside, gradually forming a deep bond.

• The film adapts Jean Giono's 1951 novel Le Hussard sur le toit, combining a historical adventure with the real cholera epidemic that struck southern France in 1832.

• Production lasted approximately four and a half months and used around 50 locations across Provence and southeastern France.

• Olivier Martinez trained in fencing and horseback riding for the role, and also learned to speak Italian.

• The production was regarded at the time as one of the most expensive projects in French cinema, with its large-scale period recreation requiring extensive location work and elaborate sets.
