Synopsis

A group of volunteers arrives at Hill House to participate in a sleep-disorder study led by Dr. David Marrow. As the mansion reveals its violent history, Eleanor Vance becomes increasingly connected to the house and its supernatural presence. The group must uncover the truth behind Hill House before its malevolent force claims them all.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film is based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House. It is a separate adaptation rather than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1963 film.

• Stephen King originally worked on an earlier version of the project with Steven Spielberg. After that version collapsed because of creative differences, King reworked elements of his screenplay into the 2002 television miniseries Rose Red.

• Most of Hill House was built as elaborate interior sets in Los Angeles. Location filming also took place at Harlaxton Manor and Belvoir Castle in England.

• Production designer Eugenio Zanetti created the mansion as an extravagant, theatrical environment, including oversized doors, elaborate statuary, and a mirrored ballroom with a revolving floor.

• Visual effects designer Phil Tippett and his team created the film's supernatural imagery, including the ghostly children moving beneath a bedsheet and spirits emerging from the mansion's walls.

• The ending was rewritten and reshot late in production after studio executives felt the original conclusion was unclear.

• The film was released in July 1999 and became a commercial success despite receiving generally negative reviews. Its production design and visual effects were more widely praised than its screenplay or scares.
