Synopsis

Darryl Kerrigan and his close-knit family live happily in a modest home beside an airport. When the government issues a compulsory acquisition notice to make way for an expansion, the Kerrigans refuse to leave. With the help of an inexperienced lawyer, Darryl takes his fight through the courts, defending not just a property but the memories, pride, and family life attached to it.

• The Castle was created by the Working Dog team, who wrote the screenplay in roughly two weeks and completed the film from initial idea to final cut in about five weeks.

• The production was made on a tightly controlled schedule, with principal photography taking approximately ten days. The filmmakers financed the project themselves, which helped determine its deliberately compact scale.

• Most of the film was shot around Melbourne in July 1996. The Kerrigan home was filmed at a real house in Strathmore, while other locations included Essendon Airport, Brunswick, and the former Pentridge Prison.

• The surname Kerrigan was chosen partly because it allowed the production to borrow tow trucks from a real Melbourne company called Kerrigan's Towing.

• The title draws on the expression "A man's home is his castle," giving the film's affectionate working-class comedy a clear thematic foundation.
