Factoids & Trivia
- The project began development in 1993 as a lower-budget slasher conceived by makeup-effects artist Kevin Yagher and writer Andrew Kevin Walker. Tim Burton's involvement transformed it into a lavish Gothic period mystery.
- Although the story is set in New York's Hudson Valley, the film was shot primarily in England. The production used Leavesden Film Studios, Shepperton Studios, Hatfield House, and a purpose-built village at Culden Faw Estate.
- The filmmakers initially scouted locations in and around Tarrytown, New York, the area associated with Washington Irving's original story. They ultimately chose controlled studio environments because the desired look was more expressionistic than realistic.
- The visual design drew on Hammer horror films, German Expressionism, American colonial architecture, and the illustrations of Dr. Seuss. The production design earned the film an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award.
- The village set was built with complete rooms, floors, and stairways rather than as a collection of shallow facades. It was dismantled after filming ended.
- A large soundstage was converted into the film's forest, allowing the crew to control the fog, lighting, weather, and elaborate horseman sequences. The Tree of the Dead set was constructed at Shepperton Studios.
- The film's supernatural atmosphere was reinforced by Danny Elfman's score, recorded at Abbey Road Studios and Air Lyndhurst Studios in England.
- Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse used as Ichabod Crane's mount, after learning that the animal was facing euthanasia.
- Released in the United States on November 19, 1999, the film became a substantial commercial success and earned more than $200 million worldwide.
