Synopsis

When college student Josh accidentally mails a sex tape instead of a personal video to his long-distance girlfriend, he recruits three friends for a frantic 1,800-mile drive from Ithaca to Austin. With only a few days to intercept the package, the group faces wrecked cars, unexpected detours, family trouble, and a series of increasingly bizarre roadside encounters.

• Ithaca University is fictional. The story was partly inspired by writer Scot Armstrong and Todd Phillips' experiences at Ithaca College in New York.

• Although the story visits colleges in Ithaca, Boston, and Austin, much of the campus material was filmed at Georgia Tech, Emory University, and the University of Georgia.

• The opening aerial footage of Harvard University was reused in the 2003 comedy Old School.

• Filming took place from October 16 through December 27, 1999, with locations including Austin, Athens, and Lawrenceville, Georgia.

• The film was released in the United States on May 19, 2000. Made for an estimated $16 million, it earned approximately $119.8 million worldwide.

• A direct sequel was considered after the film's successful theatrical run and DVD sales. The project was not pursued, partly because the producers struggled to find an idea that would not resemble American Pie too closely.

• Some concepts considered for the proposed sequel were later developed into EuroTrip, released in 2004.

• The film includes a brief cameo by Todd Phillips as the unusual passenger on the bus.
