Synopsis
In Los Angeles, a series of criminals, hustlers, and outsiders become connected through a chain of violent and unexpectedly comic incidents. Two hitmen prepare for a mysterious assignment, a mobster's wife spends an eventful night out, a boxer makes a dangerous decision, and a pair of small-time robbers disrupt a restaurant breakfast. Told out of chronological order, the stories gradually reveal their hidden connections.
Factoids & Trivia
- The screenplay was assembled with Roger Avary from several earlier story ideas and unused scenes, including material connected to True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, and Natural Born Killers.
- Tarantino and Avary worked on the screenplay in Amsterdam in 1992. Details from their stay, including European fast-food culture, later became part of the film's memorable dialogue.
- The film was made on a production budget of approximately $8 million. The Jack Rabbit Slim's restaurant set was built inside a Culver City warehouse and was reportedly the production's most expensive individual set.
- Pulp Fiction won the Palme d'Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, helping turn the film into an international cultural event before its US theatrical release on October 14, 1994.
- It received seven Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Screenplay, shared by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary.
- The 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu used in the film belonged to Tarantino. It was stolen during production and recovered nearly two decades later, in 2013.
- The film's deliberately nonlinear structure allows events shown near the beginning and end to overlap, making chronology part of its storytelling design rather than simply a stylistic effect.
