Synopsis

In 1918, 17-year-old Riyo leaves Yokohama for Hawaii to marry Matsuji, a plantation worker she knows only from a photograph. Disappointed by the reality of her much older husband and the harsh plantation life, she struggles with loneliness and cultural displacement. Her friendship with Kana, another Japanese immigrant, gradually helps her find strength and a sense of belonging in her new home.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film explores the historical practice of Japanese "picture brides," women who immigrated to Hawaii after marrying men they had previously known only through photographs and correspondence.

• Picture Bride premiered at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it was presented as a first film.

• At the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, it won the Audience Award for a dramatic feature and was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.

• The production faced unusually difficult weather during filming in Hawaii. The crew had expected a dry summer, but the shoot coincided with one of the rainiest summer seasons in the islands' history.

• Toshiro Mifune made a special appearance in the film. It was one of his final screen roles and is commonly described as his penultimate film appearance.

• Miramax released the film on DVD in 2004 with The Picture Bride Journey, a making-of documentary featuring interviews, archival material, and behind-the-scenes footage.
