Synopsis

Ludovic, a young child who believes she is meant to be a girl, expresses her identity through clothes, play, and dreams of marrying a neighborhood boy. What begins as an amusing curiosity for her family gradually provokes hostility from relatives, classmates, and neighbors. As social pressure fractures the household, Ludovic must navigate rejection while holding on to her imaginative sense of self.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film is an international production involving France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Most of the production work was handled by the French company Haut et Court, and filming took place south of Paris.

• The screenplay was written by Alain Berliner and Chris Vander Stappen. Vander Stappen chose the perspective of a child assigned male at birth because gender nonconformity in boys was considered a stronger social taboo than tomboy behavior in girls.

• The film's original working title was "Tic Tac Toe." The title "Ma vie en rose" was adopted later and reflects the contrast between Ludovic's colorful inner world and the increasingly gray, restrictive world around her.

• Despite its apparent connection to Edith Piaf's song "La Vie en rose," the title was not intended as a reference to the song.

• Producer Carole Scotta described the project as difficult to finance because of its subject matter and the special effects required for Ludovic's dream sequences.

• The visual design deliberately uses bright, softened colors associated with childhood. As the family's problems intensify, the real-world scenes become less colorful and more visually divided.

• The film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film at the 55th Golden Globe Awards in 1998. It was also selected as Belgium's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not receive a nomination.

• The closing song, "Rose," was composed by Dominique Dalcan and performed by Zazie.
