Synopsis

Muriel Heslop dreams of escaping her stifling hometown and the judgment of her family and former friends. After moving to Sydney with Rhonda, she begins rebuilding her life while clinging to fantasies of romance, popularity and marriage. A sham wedding arrangement appears to offer the transformation she wants, but Muriel gradually learns that genuine friendship and self-respect matter more than social approval.

Factoids & Trivia

• P.J. Hogan drew aspects of Muriel's personality from himself, while some of her actions were inspired by an incident involving his sister.

• Toni Collette gained approximately 40 pounds in seven weeks for the role, working with a dietitian.

• Hogan originally had difficulty securing permission to use ABBA's music. He offered to travel to Europe to make his case, and the band eventually agreed to license the songs in exchange for a percentage of the film's profits.

• Bill Hunter filmed this movie and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at the same time. The productions required different hair and beard styles, as well as work in different parts of Australia.

• The photographs shown in the Heslop family album were genuine childhood pictures of the performers playing the family.

• The film premiered at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival and received major Australian awards, including the Australian Film Institute award for Best Film.

• Its enduring popularity later led to a stage musical adaptation, which premiered in Australia in 2017.
