Synopsis

Young Jim Hawkins inherits a treasure map from the dying Billy Bones and joins Gonzo, Rizzo, and the crew of the Hispaniola on a voyage to find Captain Flint's lost fortune. But the ship's cook, Long John Silver, is secretly leading a pirate conspiracy. On the island, the adventurers face betrayals, eccentric inhabitants, dangerous obstacles, and a battle for the buried treasure.

Factoids & Trivia

• Released in the United States on February 16, 1996, the film was the fifth theatrical Muppet feature.

• The production built a large version of the Hispaniola for studio work. A smaller one-to-five-scale ship was also created for high-seas shots, with some location filming carried out in the Virgin Islands.

• Frank Oz was unavailable for much of the filming because of scheduling conflicts with his directing work. Kevin Clash performed several of Oz's characters on set, while Oz supplied their voices later.

• Hormel Foods sued over the name Spa'am, the warthog character. The lawsuit was defeated in September 1995.

• Kevin Bishop's voice changed during production, so some of Jim Hawkins' singing was completed using earlier recordings and overdubbing.

• The film's songs include "Shiver My Timbers," "Sailing for Adventure," "Cabin Fever," and "Professional Pirate," with music by Hans Zimmer and additional songwriting by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

• Tim Curry was given a Muppet modeled after Long John Silver after filming ended.

• The closing credits continue the film's comic tone with a stone head telling Long John Silver a joke.
