Synopsis

After inheriting a run-down mansion and a failing string factory, brothers Ernie and Lars Smuntz discover that their new home is occupied by a remarkably resourceful mouse. Their increasingly desperate attempts to remove it escalate into elaborate traps, destructive sabotage, and all-out domestic warfare, threatening both their inheritance and their already strained relationship.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The mouse was portrayed through a combination of live animals and animatronic effects. Several sequences also use the mouse's point of view.
  • The elaborate mousetrap sequence was created without digital effects. More than 800 traps were individually set and connected to wires beneath the floor, requiring each one to be reset and baited between takes.
  • William Hickey was seriously ill during production and died near the end of principal photography. His scenes had already been completed, and the finished film was dedicated to him.
  • Mouse Hunt was one of DreamWorks Pictures' first feature releases and its first family-oriented live-action film.
  • The production included specialized animal trainers and a dedicated mouse-and-cat training team. Animal actors were monitored under the American Humane Association's "No Animals Were Harmed" program.
