Synopsis

To stop a deadly disease spread by cockroaches, entomologist Susan Tyler creates the genetically engineered Judas Breed, designed to eliminate the insects and die out afterward. Three years later, people begin disappearing in New York's subway tunnels, and Susan discovers that her creation survived, reproduced, and evolved the ability to imitate human appearance while hunting the city's underground inhabitants.

• The film expands Donald A. Wollheim's short story "Mimic," originally published in the science-fiction magazine Astonishing Stories in 1942.

• The project reportedly began as a segment for the abandoned anthology film Light Years before being developed into a feature.

• Although the story takes place in New York City, much of the production was filmed in Toronto. Locations included the Lower Bay subway station, the Harris Filtration Plant, Osgoode Hall, and Wycliffe College.

• The Judas Breed was created through a combination of full-scale animatronic effects, computer-generated imagery, miniature photography, and practical creature work.

• A later director's cut adds approximately seven minutes of material, with extensions involving both the characters and the story.

• The film was followed by two direct-to-video sequels, Mimic 2 in 2001 and Mimic: Sentinel in 2003.
