Synopsis

After being dumped by their girlfriends on the same day, aimless best friends T.S. and Brodie retreat to their favorite shopping mall. T.S. tries to sabotage his ex-girlfriend's appearance on a dating show, while Brodie pursues his own schemes and escapes the mall's security. Their chaotic day brings comic-book fandom, romantic desperation, and increasingly elaborate mischief together.

Factoids & Trivia

• Mallrats was released by Gramercy Pictures on October 20, 1995, following the unexpected success of Clerks. It was made on a reported $6.1 million budget but earned only about $2.1 million theatrically.

• The film was shot largely at Eden Prairie Center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. To make the location resemble New Jersey, production assistants placed paper New Jersey license plates on cars in the parking lot. Some mall customers reportedly drove away with the temporary plates still attached.

• Brodie's comic-book collection came from Kevin Smith's personal collection. He had previously sold his original comics to help finance Clerks, then bought many of them back before making Mallrats.

• The studio considered replacing the performer playing Jay and required additional auditions, but Smith insisted that the established View Askewniverse regular remain in the role.

• Stan Lee appears as himself, reinforcing the film's interest in comic books and giving Brodie an unlikely opportunity to seek romantic advice from a comics legend.

• The movie was initially dismissed as a critical and commercial failure, but its audience grew through VHS, television, and later DVD releases. It is now regarded as a cult favorite and an important early entry in the View Askewniverse.

• The story's many references to Jaws include character names and a proposed marriage-proposal location connected with the Universal Studios attraction.
