Synopsis

In 2058, the Robinson family joins a mission to colonize a habitable planet near Alpha Centauri. After Dr. Zachary Smith sabotages their ship, the crew is thrown far off course and stranded in an unknown region of space. As they encounter hostile creatures, a mysterious future version of their own vessel, and temporal distortions, they struggle to survive and find a way home.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film is based on the 1965-1968 television series, which was itself inspired by Johann David Wyss' novel The Swiss Family Robinson.

• Several members of the original television cast appear in cameo roles, creating a direct link between the film and the earlier series.

• More than 700 visual-effects shots were planned for the production, involving companies including Computer Film Company, The Mill, Cinesite, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

• New Line Cinema developed the film as a possible multimedia franchise. Tie-in plans included animated and live-action television projects, toys, and novelizations.

• Lost in Space opened at number one in the United States in April 1998. Its opening weekend ended Titanics 15-week run at the top of the box office and set an April opening record that lasted until The Matrix surpassed it in 1999.

• Composer Bruce Broughton's score did not use themes from the original television series. The soundtrack album instead combined selections from his orchestral score with electronic music, much of it heard during the end credits.

• The film received six Saturn Award nominations, including one for Gary Oldman's supporting performance.
