Synopsis

Private detective Harry D'Amour is hired to protect Dorothea Swann, the widow of celebrated illusionist Philip Swann. His investigation uncovers a hidden history involving a murderous cult, a resurrected sorcerer named Nix, and magic that is far more literal than stage trickery. As D'Amour follows the trail from Los Angeles to the desert, he becomes caught in a battle between human ambition and supernatural power.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film adapts Clive Barker's short story "The Last Illusion," published in Books of Blood Volume 6. The movie expands the story into a larger supernatural detective narrative centered on Harry D'Amour.

• Barker described the film's central contrast as the difference between stage illusion and genuine magic. He deliberately repeated images from Swann's stage act, including sand, a sarcophagus, skeletons, fire, and a demonic statue, so that the performance would echo later events.

• The line in which Harry asks where a vanished flower went was an ad-lib. Barker regarded the question as the audience's response to the distinction between an illusion and real magic.

• The theatrical cut runs 109 minutes. A longer unrated version adds roughly twelve minutes, including additional plot material, sexual content, and more graphic violence.

• A scripted sequence involving the death of Nix's pet mandrill was removed after the mechanical puppet used for the effects failed to operate convincingly.

• The film's final effects were made more elaborate after United Artists provided additional money for Nix's destruction. Barker later explained that the ending was designed to make the villain's death unmistakably final.
