Synopsis

In early 20th-century Montana, retired Colonel William Ludlow raises his three sons in the wilderness. Their lives are transformed by World War I, family rivalries, and their shared love for Susannah, the fiancee of the youngest brother. As tragedy and betrayal reshape the Ludlow family, the brothers follow separate paths through war, romance, ambition, and revenge across several decades.

• The film is based on Jim Harrison's 1979 novella of the same name.

• Although the story is set largely in Montana, much of the production was filmed in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. The Ludlow ranch scenes were shot near Alberta's Ghost River, while Vancouver's Gastown was dressed to represent early 20th-century Helena, Montana.

• The World War I battlefield sequences were filmed near Morley, Alberta. Hundreds of local residents and several Canadian Forces personnel were recruited as extras.

• The production used the Hotel Europe in Vancouver for scenes set in the period's Helena hotel interiors.

• John Toll won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The film also received Oscar nominations for its art direction and sound.

• Animal actors used in the production were monitored through the American Humane Association's "No Animals Were Harmed" program.

• The film opened in limited release on December 23, 1994, before expanding nationwide in January 1995. It became a substantial commercial success against its reported $30 million production budget.
