Synopsis

A year after surviving a murderous fisherman, Julie James still struggles with nightmares about the past. When her roommate wins an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bahamas, Julie joins her friends at an isolated island resort. Their getaway turns into a nightmare when a killer begins stalking the guests, trapping the group on the island as a hurricane approaches.

Factoids & Trivia

• The sequel was developed quickly to capitalize on the commercial success of the 1997 original. Filming took place from April 27 through July 3, 1998, and the movie reached theaters on November 13 of the same year.

• An earlier sequel idea would have returned the story to a college setting. That proposal was not used; the production ultimately selected a screenplay by Trey Callaway, while another version by Stephen Gaghan reportedly would have taken place in New Orleans.

• Although the story is set in the Bahamas, much of the resort material was filmed in Mexico, including locations around Costa Careyes and El Tamarindo in Jalisco. The landscape occasionally reveals the film's actual location.

• Composer John Frizzell deliberately avoided reusing the original film's musical themes. Instead, he created a different sound for the island setting, using manipulated vocals, a psaltery, and a detuned dulcimer to build an atmospheric sense of unease.

• The soundtrack album was released on November 17, 1998. It included "How Do I Deal," a song performed by Jennifer Love Hewitt that was later issued as a single and promoted with a music video.

• The film opened in second place at the domestic box office, earning approximately $16.5 million during its first weekend. It eventually earned about $40 million in the United States and was reported to have grossed roughly $84 million worldwide.

• Critical reaction was substantially harsher than the audience response. The film received a "B" CinemaScore from opening-night audiences despite largely unfavorable reviews and a very low Rotten Tomatoes approval rating.
