Synopsis

Three college roommates decide to study gossip for a class project by planting a rumor about a popular couple. As the story spreads across campus, casual speculation mutates into a serious accusation, drawing police attention and threatening to destroy several lives. The students soon discover that manipulating public opinion has consequences they cannot control.

• Although the story is set at a Manhattan college, filming took place in Toronto and Uxbridge, Ontario, from October through December 1998.

• The campus location had also appeared in Urban Legend and The Skulls. Joshua Jackson appeared in all three films.

• James Marsden performs "Glow," one of the songs used in the film.

• Kate Hudson reportedly almost left the production to appear in Almost Famous.

• Brittany Murphy and Reese Witherspoon were considered for the role of Naomi, while Jennifer Love Hewitt and Maggie Gyllenhaal were considered for Jones.
