Synopsis

After a devastating betrayal by a former ally, James Bond is sent to investigate the theft of a satellite weapon capable of crippling electronic systems worldwide. His pursuit leads from Monte Carlo to St. Petersburg and Cuba, where Bond must stop a revenge-driven conspiracy, confront his former friend, and prevent the GoldenEye system from triggering a global financial catastrophe.

• GoldenEye was the seventeenth official James Bond film and the first released after a six-year hiatus caused by legal disputes involving the series.

• The title refers both to the fictional satellite weapon and to GoldenEye, Ian Fleming's home in Jamaica, where he wrote the Bond novels and short stories.

• The film was the first Bond production to use computer-generated imagery. CGI was used notably in the gun-barrel opening and in the climactic confrontation around the satellite dish.

• Because Pinewood Studios was unavailable, an abandoned Rolls-Royce factory at Leavesden Aerodrome was converted into a large film studio. The production helped establish Leavesden as a major filmmaking site.

• The tank chase was filmed partly in St. Petersburg and partly at Leavesden. A modified T-55 tank was used, and the crew nicknamed it "Metal Mickey."

• The bungee jump in the pre-title sequence was filmed at Switzerland's Contra Dam. The stunt became one of the film's most recognizable images.
