Synopsis

After serving three years in prison for her gangster boyfriend, Gloria returns to New York expecting payment. Instead, she finds seven-year-old Nicky, whose family has been murdered by the mob. Reluctantly taking responsibility for him, Gloria goes on the run, using her street knowledge and toughness to protect the boy while seeking a way to escape the gang's reach.

• Sharon Stone was cast in April 1997, and the production searched for a young performer to play Nicky. Jean-Luke Figueroa, who was six at the time, won the role despite the initial search calling for a boy aged seven to nine.

• Scott Kalvert was initially assigned to direct the project but left during development. Sidney Lumet took over in July 1997, with filming beginning after rehearsals in September.

• George C. Scott's role as Ruby marked his final feature-film appearance. He died eight months after the film's release.
