Synopsis

An aspiring actress, frustrated by repeated rejection, takes a job at a phone-sex call center to pay her bills. Using the name "Girl 6," she discovers an unexpected talent for performing through the telephone, but the work gradually blurs the boundary between fantasy and reality. As her confidence grows, she must decide whether to keep chasing acting or embrace her new identity.

• Suzan-Lori Parks wrote the screenplay. It was the first film directed by Spike Lee that he did not also write.

• The soundtrack is composed entirely of songs associated with Prince, including material by Prince, The Revolution, the New Power Generation, and Vanity 6. Three songs were previously unreleased when the album appeared.

• The male callers were filmed in high-definition video and transferred to film, giving their scenes a deliberately different visual texture from the rest of the movie.

• Quentin Tarantino and Ron Silver appear in cameo roles as directors conducting auditions.

• The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.

• Despite its distinctive soundtrack and stylized presentation, the film earned approximately $4.9 million in worldwide theatrical box office against an estimated $12 million budget.
