Synopsis

Neglected heiress Emily Hope stages her own kidnapping to win her wealthy father's attention, hiding in the trunk of her car as part of the scheme. Her plan goes awry when car thief Vincent Roche steals the vehicle, unaware of his unwanted passenger. Forced to escape together, the mismatched pair must evade both the police and the men sent to bring Emily home.

• The screenplay began as the winner of the first annual Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition. Producer Barry Josephson acquired it while working at Sony Pictures.

• Alicia Silverstone's production company, First Kiss Productions, was involved in the film. It was her first movie as a producer.

• Aaron Sorkin contributed an uncredited rewrite before production.

• The film was originally planned for a Christmas 1996 release, but difficult test screenings led to a delay and several reshoots. The additional material reportedly expanded the relationship between Emily and Vincent.

• Silverstone had seen Benicio del Toro in The Usual Suspects and reportedly wanted him for the role of Vincent.

• Several scenes were filmed in Victoria, British Columbia. The parking garage used for one of Emily's phone calls is on Yates Street, with the Johnson Street Bridge visible in the background.

• The yellow leather jacket worn by Silverstone in the film was later sold at auction, along with other pieces of the costume.

• Released in the United States on August 29, 1997, the film earned approximately $14.5 million worldwide against an estimated $20 million budget.
