Synopsis

At a Nebraska high school, relentlessly ambitious student Tracy Flick expects to win the student-body presidency without opposition. A disillusioned civics teacher, still angry over an earlier scandal involving Tracy, recruits a popular athlete to challenge her. When another student enters as an anti-establishment candidate, the campaign spirals into sabotage, resentment, and an election whose consequences reach far beyond the school.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film was adapted from Tom Perrotta's 1998 novel. Its screenplay preserves the book's shifting viewpoints through voiceovers, flashbacks, and freeze frames.

• Perrotta drew inspiration from the 1992 U.S. presidential election, including Ross Perot's third-party campaign, as well as a 1992 Wisconsin incident in which school officials allegedly burned ballots after disapproving of a homecoming queen's selection.

• Filming took place primarily around Omaha, Nebraska, in late 1997, before the novel was published.

• Papillion-La Vista Senior High School portrayed the fictional Carver High School. The production filmed while classes were in session and used local students as background performers. Some classroom sounds from the active school were retained in the finished film.

• Paramount originally planned to release the film in 1998, but its theatrical release was delayed until 1999.

• The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and later developed a strong reputation as a political satire. Its continued cultural standing was reinforced by a Criterion Collection edition featuring a new 4K restoration, released in 2017.
