Synopsis

Nicole and Chase were once inseparable childhood friends, but high school has placed them on opposite social tracks. After both are dumped before their school's centennial dance, they agree to pretend to date in order to make their exes jealous. As they move through each other's worlds, the staged romance begins to expose feelings neither expected.

• The film was originally titled Next to You. Its name was changed after Britney Spears' song "(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix!)" was added to the soundtrack.

• Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier appeared in Spears' music video for "(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix!)", creating a direct promotional link between the single and the film.

• The screenplay was adapted from Todd Strasser's young-adult novel How I Created My Perfect Prom Date.
