Synopsis

Doug Funnie and Skeeter Valentine discover Herman Melville, a friendly creature living in Lucky Duck Lake. When local businessman Bill Bluff tries to hide the monster's existence, the boys set out to protect him and expose the truth. Doug must also balance the rescue mission with his hopes of taking Patti Mayonnaise to the Valentine's Day dance.

Factoids & Trivia

• The project dates back to 1993, when Nickelodeon was developing a proposed Doug feature with 20th Century Fox. That version disappeared after corporate changes, and the film was revived after Disney acquired Jumbo Pictures in 1996.

• The movie was originally planned as a direct-to-video release under the working title "The First Doug Movie...EVER!". Disney shifted it to theaters after the strong performance of The Rugrats Movie in 1998.

• Its theatrical release was paired with the two-minute Mickey Mouse Works short "Donald's Dynamite: Opera Box," featuring Donald and Daisy Duck.

• The production used traditional cel animation, while the title sequence used digital ink and paint.

• A subplot involving Roger Klotz developing a crush on Herman Melville while disguised as Hermione was removed from the finished film but retained in the novelization.

• Released on March 26, 1999, the film became the only theatrical feature based on Doug. The franchise did not receive another feature film.
