Synopsis

After a deadly ferry bombing in New Orleans, ATF agent Doug Carlin joins a secret government project that can observe events from four days in the past. As he studies the moments leading to the attack, Carlin becomes determined to identify the bomber, prevent another disaster, and save Claire Kuchever, a woman whose murder appears connected to the larger conspiracy.

• The screenplay was reportedly sold for $5 million before production, an unusually high price for an original science-fiction script.

• The story was originally set on Long Island, but New Orleans became the setting after the filmmakers decided its distinctive locations better suited the material.

• Production was disrupted by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The film eventually became the first major Hollywood production to shoot in New Orleans after the disaster, and some post-Katrina locations were incorporated into the movie.

• The ferry explosion was filmed with a real New Orleans ferry. The production used 50 gasoline-based pyrotechnic charges, and the vessel was later repaired and returned to service.

• The film's "time window" imagery combined computer graphics, LIDAR scans, thermal and infrared photography, and footage captured with a multi-camera rig. More than 400 visual-effects shots were created.

• Physicist Brian Greene served as a scientific consultant, helping the filmmakers present the movie's wormhole and time-bending ideas with a more credible scientific foundation.

• The film premiered in New York on November 20, 2006, and opened widely in the United States and Canada on November 22, 2006. It earned approximately $180 million worldwide.
