Synopsis

In rural County Donegal during the summer of 1936, five unmarried Mundy sisters struggle to maintain their household while supporting Christina's young son. Their fragile routine is unsettled by the return of their missionary priest brother, Jack, and Christina's erratic lover, Gerry. As economic hardship, social change, and family tensions gather, a season of music and dancing becomes a bittersweet memory of a family facing irreversible change.

Factoids & Trivia

• The film adapts Brian Friel's 1990 stage play, with the screenplay written by fellow Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. The play had already won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1992.

• Unlike the stage version, which takes place almost entirely around the Mundy home, the film expands the story with scenes set in the surrounding countryside, at Lough Anna, in Ballybeg, and in the Back Hills.

• Filming took place in County Wicklow during August and October 1997. Locations included the Sally Gap, the village of Hollywood, the Wicklow Mountains, and Ardmore Studios in Bray.

• The score was composed by Bill Whelan, whose work on Riverdance had made him internationally known. Traditional Irish music and the sisters' spontaneous dancing are central to the film's atmosphere.

• The title refers to Lughnasa, a pre-Christian Irish harvest festival traditionally associated with August 1. In the story, the festival's celebration contrasts with the family's worsening economic and personal circumstances.

• The film competed at the 1998 Venice Film Festival. Bríd Brennan, who had played Agnes in major stage productions of Friel's play, won an Irish Film and Television Award for her performance in the film.
