Synopsis

A dishonest courier is framed for murder after stumbling into a criminal scheme and goes on the run. To evade the authorities, Max Grabelski steals a van and assumes the identity of a scout leader. Forced to guide a group of children through the wilderness, he struggles with outdoor survival while trying to clear his name and stay ahead of both the FBI and the real criminals.

Factoids & Trivia

• The screenplay was originally developed under the title "Tenderfoot." Bobby Farrelly was involved in the early writing, but the Farrelly brothers removed their names after substantial changes were made to the script.

• The title was changed to "Bushwhacked" after test screenings.

• Principal photography took place in California, including the South Fork American River, Lake Tahoe, Tahoe National Forest, and Placerville, from September 14 to November 29, 1994.

• The young performers received training for the swimming and rock-climbing sequences. Daniel Stern intentionally avoided exercising beforehand because he wanted Max to appear especially unprepared for life in the outdoors.

• The production's animal performers included a bear and cub, bees, a dog, and other woodland animals. Their use was monitored under the American Humane Association's "No Animals Were Harmed" program.

• The film was released theatrically in the United States on August 4, 1995, and earned approximately $7.9 million domestically.

• Its theatrical trailer used music from "Rookie of the Year," another film directed by Daniel Stern.
