Synopsis

After serving time for a diamond heist, Miles Logan returns to Los Angeles to recover the gem he hid at a construction site. The site has become a police station, forcing Miles to impersonate a detective to get inside. Paired with an earnest rookie officer, he unexpectedly becomes involved in police work while trying to conceal his criminal past.

• The production originally developed the project as a hard-R crime comedy. The script was substantially toned down to achieve a PG-13 rating, with John August brought in for script revisions.

• The police station exterior was not a permanent police building. A facade was constructed and attached to the Los Angeles Central Library in downtown Los Angeles. Construction reportedly took five weeks, followed by another week and a half to install it.

• Filming took place in California from January 22 through April 16, 1999, with locations including Los Angeles, Fontana, and Santa Clarita.

• The movie opened at number one in North America on September 17, 1999. It earned approximately $117.4 million worldwide against a reported $36 million production budget.

• The soundtrack emphasized contemporary urban and hip-hop music, featuring artists including Jay-Z, Foxy Brown, Tyrese, and Heavy D. The soundtrack album was later certified gold.

• A sequel had been discussed as early as the 2000s but never materialized. In October 2024, Sony and Martin Lawrence were reported to be developing a new sequel, with Cole Maliska attached to write the screenplay.
