Synopsis

After the murder of her husband and son, American doctor Laura Bowman travels to Burma with her sister, hoping to escape her grief. When she becomes stranded in Rangoon during the 1988 pro-democracy uprising, Laura joins student activist U Aung Ko on a dangerous journey through a country under military repression, gradually finding the courage to confront both the political violence around her and her own emotional despair.
