Synopsis

Two childhood friends rise through New York's criminal underworld as drug dealers and robbers, but success gradually pulls them in different directions. While one begins questioning the violence and empty rewards of their lifestyle, the other remains committed to the fast money and dangerous code that made them powerful. Their choices eventually lead them toward sharply different futures.

• The film was shot in New York, New Jersey, and Jamaica between February 19 and April 3, 1998.

• Its elaborate opening robbery was filmed inside the former Tunnel nightclub in New York City. The sequence used striking blacklight imagery and slow motion, establishing the film's highly stylized visual approach immediately.

• The story was developed from an idea originally written by Nas, with the screenplay also credited to Anthony Bodden.

• The park-bench conversation involving Sincere and a young boy echoes the final verse of Nas' song "One Love" from the 1994 album *Illmatic*.

• A scene in which the characters watch television at Buns' house features footage from Larry Clark's *Gummo* (1997).

• The soundtrack was released by Def Jam Recordings on November 3, 1998. It reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in the United States.
