Synopsis

Piano player Willie Conway returns to his Massachusetts hometown for a high school reunion, expecting a brief visit before resuming his life in New York. Instead, he is drawn into the romantic frustrations, old rivalries, and uncertain futures of his longtime friends. As the weekend unfolds, Willie must confront his own hesitation about commitment, adulthood, and the idealized image of love.

Factoids & Trivia

• Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg drew on his own experiences returning to Needham, Massachusetts. While waiting to learn whether his action script Con Air would be produced, he became more interested in the personal dramas of friends approaching thirty than in stories centered on violence.

• Ted Demme brought the cast to Minneapolis for two or three weeks before filming and had them live together to encourage the familiarity and camaraderie seen among the characters.

• Although the story is set in Massachusetts, much of the production took place in Minnesota, including locations in Edina, Marine-on-St. Croix, and Stillwater. Demme wanted the small-town setting to function as an important presence in the film.

• The barroom rendition of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" predates the song's adoption as a regular singalong at Boston's Fenway Park, which began in 1997.

• The film's tagline, "Good times never seemed so good," comes from the chorus of "Sweet Caroline."

• Rosenberg later co-created the television series October Road, which also takes place in the fictional Massachusetts town of Knight's Ridge. The series was loosely inspired by the aftermath of Beautiful Girls and the reactions of people who recognized elements of themselves in the film.
