Synopsis

San Francisco homicide detective Nick Curran investigates the ice-pick murder of rock star Johnny Boz. Suspicion centers on Catherine Tramell, a wealthy crime novelist whose latest book eerily resembles the killing. As Nick becomes involved with Catherine, the case grows more dangerous, drawing in police colleagues, former lovers, and a tangled web of manipulation, obsession, and unresolved questions about guilt.

Factoids & Trivia

• Joe Eszterhas wrote the screenplay in just 13 days. The script became the subject of a bidding war before Carolco Pictures acquired it for a reported $3 million.

• Sharon Stone was Paul Verhoeven's preferred choice for Catherine Tramell, but the studio initially resisted casting her because she was not yet considered a major star. Several established actresses reportedly declined the role because of its sexual content.

• The film was initially assigned an NC-17 rating by the MPAA. To secure an R rating for its theatrical release, approximately 35 to 40 seconds were removed, mainly involving sexual content and violence. More explicit material later appeared in unrated and director's-cut versions.

• Gay and lesbian activists protested during production and around the film's release, objecting to its depiction of bisexuality, lesbian relationships, and violence. The controversy became a major part of the film's public identity.

• Wayne Knight's performance as John Correli attracted Steven Spielberg's attention. Spielberg watched through the end credits to identify Knight and subsequently cast him as Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park (1993).

• Jerry Goldsmith's score was released alongside the film in March 1992. An expanded edition issued in 2004 restored additional music and alternate compositions.

• Basic Instinct became one of the defining erotic thrillers of the 1990s. Despite mixed critical reactions and intense controversy, it was a major commercial success and helped establish Sharon Stone as an international star.
