Synopsis

After years in suspended animation, Ellen Ripley learns that a human colony has been established on the planet where her crew first encountered the alien species. She returns with a squad of Colonial Marines, expecting a rescue mission. Instead, they find the colony abandoned and face a vastly larger threat, including a powerful alien queen.

• Unlike the claustrophobic horror of Alien, the sequel was deliberately shaped as a military science-fiction action film, while retaining the original's horror elements.

• Principal photography took place mainly at Pinewood Studios in England. The production also used a decommissioned power station for the colony and alien hive sets. The location contained asbestos and required professional cleaning before filming could continue.

• The alien queen was created as a large practical effects puppet under the supervision of Stan Winston. The film's creature work combined puppetry, full-size effects, miniatures, suits, and optical compositing rather than relying on computer-generated imagery.
