Synopsis

After losing his job, a frustrated cleaner kidnaps his wealthy employer's daughter, expecting a straightforward ransom scheme. Instead, the supposedly captive heiress chooses to stay with him for the adventure. As they flee across Utah, two angels intervene, manipulating the mismatched pair through danger, violence, and romantic confusion in an attempt to prove that love can triumph over cynicism and bad judgment.

• The film reunited the creative team behind Shallow Grave and Trainspotting: writer John Hodge, producer Andrew Macdonald, and Danny Boyle.

• Principal photography took place in Utah between September 30 and December 5, 1996. Locations included Salt Lake City, Layton, and Moab, with additional work in Los Angeles.

• The Naville mansion scenes were filmed in Malibu, California, rather than Utah.

• Cameron Diaz was chosen after the filmmakers became fans of her performance in The Mask. The production team also saw the film as an opportunity to build a romance around the contrasting screen energies of Diaz and Ewan McGregor.

• The karaoke sequence helped inspire the film's 1998 MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Dance Sequence.
