Ginuwine is the stage name of Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, an American R&B singer whose smooth tenor, sensual delivery, and association with producer Timbaland made him one of the defining male voices of late-1990s hip-hop soul. Born October 15, 1970, in Washington, D.C., he developed an early interest in performance through the music of Michael Jackson and Prince. Before achieving national recognition, he performed with local groups and worked as a Michael Jackson impersonator.
Lumpkin became involved with the Swing Mob collective in the early 1990s, a loose Rochester-based musical circle connected with producer DeVante Swing and artists including Timbaland and Missy Elliott. That environment helped introduce him to the production style that would shape his breakthrough. Adopting the name Ginuwine, he recorded "Pony," a strikingly minimalist and futuristic R&B track produced by Timbaland. Released in 1996, the single became a major success, reaching the top of the R&B singles chart and the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
"Pony" led into Ginuwine's debut album, Ginuwine...the Bachelor (1996). Built around Timbaland's unconventional rhythms and Ginuwine's relaxed, flirtatious vocals, the album established a distinctive formula: electronic textures, clipped percussion, traditional romantic balladry, and overtly sensual themes. In addition to "Pony," the album produced the R&B hits "Tell Me Do U Wanna," "I'll Do Anything/I'm Sorry," "Holler," and "Only When Ur Lonely." It eventually received double-platinum certification in the United States and positioned Ginuwine as both a recording artist and a prominent sex symbol of the era.
His second album, 100% Ginuwine (1999), continued the collaboration with Timbaland while broadening the singer's commercial appeal. The record reached the top five of the Billboard 200 and included "So Anxious," "What's So Different?" and "None of Ur Friends Business." Ginuwine also used the album to acknowledge major influences, recording a version of Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life." Although his partnership with Timbaland became less central afterward, the producer's influence remained a crucial part of Ginuwine's musical identity.
With The Life (2001), Ginuwine moved toward a more conventional contemporary R&B sound. The album debuted in the top three and produced "There It Is" and "Differences," the latter becoming his biggest pop hit, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Later albums included The Senior (2003), Back II da Basics (2005), A Man's Thoughts (2009), and Elgin (2010/2011). These releases emphasized his strengths as a romantic vocalist while reflecting the changing production styles of mainstream R&B.
Ginuwine also pursued acting, appearing in the film Juwanna Mann and making television appearances in Moesha, Martial Law, and Half & Half. In 2007, he joined Tyrese and Tank to form the R&B trio TGT. After a lengthy development period, the group released Three Kings in 2013. The album reached number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number three on the Billboard 200.
Ginuwine's influence is most clearly heard in the continued recognition of "Pony," whose unusual production and instantly identifiable vocal performance have remained central to his legacy. A 2022 mashup combining the song with Britney Spears' "Toxic" introduced the track to another generation, confirming the lasting cultural reach of his signature recording.
