Kanye Omari West (born June 8, 1977), legally known as Ye, is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer. Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, he first established himself as a producer before becoming one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in hip-hop. His career has been marked by ambitious musical reinvention, a strong interest in visual presentation, and repeated controversy surrounding his public statements and behavior.

West began producing in the mid-1990s, developing a recognizable style built around manipulated soul samples, sped-up vocal fragments, and detailed, layered arrangements. His early work for Chicago artists led to wider opportunities, and he gained major attention through his production for Jay-Z's 2001 album *The Blueprint*. His work on Roc-A-Fella Records helped shape the label's sound and established him as a producer capable of combining mainstream appeal with unusually personal and emotionally direct material.

Although record executives initially doubted him as a rapper, West made his breakthrough with *The College Dropout* in 2004. The album rejected the genre's usual emphasis on street credibility, focusing instead on education, consumerism, faith, class, insecurity, and ambition. Songs such as "Through the Wire," "Jesus Walks," and "All Falls Down" presented him as both a self-conscious celebrity and an inventive producer. West expanded his sound on *Late Registration* (2005), created with producer Jon Brion and distinguished by orchestral arrangements, soulful samples, and the hit single "Gold Digger." *Graduation* (2007) moved toward electronic production and stadium-sized songwriting, producing "Stronger," "Good Life," and "Can't Tell Me Nothing." Following the death of his mother, Donda West, and a period of public turmoil, he released *808s & Heartbreak* (2008). Its heavy use of Auto-Tune, sparse electronic textures, and themes of grief and isolation influenced a new generation of melodic rappers and singers. He returned to maximalist hip-hop with *My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy* (2010), widely regarded as one of his defining works. The album combined orchestral soul, progressive rock, electronic music, and dense vocal arrangements, while songs such as "Power," "Runaway," and "All of the Lights" demonstrated his interest in cinematic music videos and visual storytelling.

West continued to shift direction through the collaborative album *Watch the Throne* (2011) with Jay-Z, the abrasive and industrial *Yeezus* (2013), and the gospel-inflected *The Life of Pablo* (2016). He later released *Ye* (2018), *Jesus Is King* (2019), and *Donda* (2021), while also collaborating with Kid Cudi as Kids See Ghosts and with Ty Dolla Sign as ¥$. The latter partnership produced *Vultures 1* and *Vultures 2* in 2024.

Beyond music, West developed the Yeezy fashion and footwear brand and collaborated with companies including Nike, Adidas, Gap, and Louis Vuitton. His influence has been accompanied by increasingly polarizing political comments, public outbursts, and antisemitic statements, which led to the loss of major business partnerships.
