Bono is the stage name of Paul David Hewson, an Irish singer, songwriter, activist, and businessman best known as the lead vocalist and principal lyricist of U2. Born in Dublin on May 10, 1960, he joined a group formed by schoolmate Larry Mullen Jr. in 1976. The band initially performed as Feedback and later The Hype before settling on the name U2. Alongside guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Mullen, Bono helped turn the young Dublin band into one of the most influential rock acts of the modern era.
U2's early records, including *Boy* (1980), *October* (1981), and *War* (1983), established a sound that combined post-punk urgency with increasingly expansive arrangements. Bono's forceful, highly expressive voice became central to the band's identity, while his lyrics brought together religious imagery, personal struggle, politics, and social justice. The atmospheric *The Unforgettable Fire* (1984) widened U2's musical palette, but it was *The Joshua Tree* (1987) that made the group an international phenomenon. Songs such as "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "With or Without You" presented Bono as both a rock frontman and a searching, often openly spiritual songwriter.
U2 continued to reinvent itself rather than repeat its breakthrough formula. *Achtung Baby* (1991) introduced a darker, more experimental approach, and the Zoo TV tour transformed Bono's stage persona through characters such as the flamboyant "The Fly" and the self-important "MacPhisto." The band's 1990s work mixed electronic music, irony, media imagery, and theatrical performance. Later albums, including *All That You Can't Leave Behind* (2000), *How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb* (2004), and *Songs of Experience* (2017), returned to a more direct rock sound while retaining U2's interest in large-scale emotional and political themes.
Bono's public role has extended well beyond music. After taking part in Band Aid and Live Aid during the 1980s, he became increasingly involved in campaigns against extreme poverty, preventable disease, and global inequality. He supported Jubilee 2000, co-founded the advocacy organization DATA, and helped establish the ONE Campaign and (RED). His approach has emphasized lobbying governments and international institutions, particularly on debt relief, HIV/AIDS treatment, and development aid. The visibility and political access produced by his activism have made him an effective campaigner in some contexts, while also attracting criticism from people skeptical of celebrity-led advocacy and corporate partnerships.
He has also pursued projects outside U2. With The Edge, he co-wrote music and lyrics for the Broadway production *Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark* and contributed to film-related projects. In 2022, Bono published the memoir *Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story*, linking episodes from his life to songs from the U2 catalog. The book became the basis for the one-man stage production *Stories of Surrender*, later adapted into the Apple TV+ documentary *Bono: Stories of Surrender*, released on May 30, 2025.
Recognized both for his music and humanitarian work, Bono received an honorary British knighthood in 2007 and the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2025. His career remains defined by the unusual scale of his ambitions: U2's songs and performances seek the emotional reach of anthems, while his activism attempts to move the same mass audience toward political action.
