Tricky is the stage name of Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws (born January 27, 1968), an English musician, rapper, producer, vocalist, and occasional actor from Bristol. He emerged from the city's influential underground scene and became one of the defining figures associated with trip hop, although his music has consistently resisted easy classification. His work combines hip-hop, dub, reggae, post-punk, alternative rock, electronic music, and soul with a deliberately tense and atmospheric production style.
Tricky began performing in the mid-1980s as part of the Wild Bunch, a Bristol sound-system collective that later developed into Massive Attack. He contributed vocals and writing to Massive Attack's breakthrough album Blue Lines (1991), helping establish the murky, rhythmically experimental sound that would become central to the Bristol scene. He also appeared on the group's Protection (1994), but by then he was already developing a separate identity as a solo artist.
His first solo recording, "Aftermath," was released independently in 1993. The track featured Martina Topley-Bird, whose cool, restrained singing provided a striking contrast to Tricky's rough, half-spoken delivery. Their collaboration became a central element of his early work. Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye, followed in 1995 and reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. Built from fractured rhythms, heavy bass, distorted samples, and uneasy exchanges between male and female voices, it became one of the most acclaimed albums of the 1990s. Songs such as "Overcome," "Hell Is Round the Corner," "Black Steel," and "Pumpkin" demonstrated his ability to turn familiar musical materials into something ominous and deeply personal.
Tricky maintained a remarkably productive period during the following years. Nearly God (1996) functioned as a collaborative project featuring artists including Bjork, Terry Hall, Alison Moyet, and Neneh Cherry. Later that year, Pre-Millennium Tension moved toward a harsher, more confrontational sound. Angels with Dirty Faces (1998) expanded his palette through further collaborations, while Juxtapose (1999), made with DJ Muggs and producer Dame Grease, placed greater emphasis on hip-hop structures.
His subsequent albums explored different sides of his musical personality. Blowback (2001) used a broad cast of guests, including Alanis Morissette, Ed Kowalczyk, and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vulnerable (2003) presented a more exposed and melodic approach. After a period away from recording, Knowle West Boy (2008) marked a strong return to the abrasive, eclectic sound associated with his best work. Mixed Race (2010), False Idols (2013), Adrian Thaws (2014), Skilled Mechanics (2016), and ununiform (2017) continued his pattern of shifting between solo albums, collaborative projects, and stylistic reinvention.
Tricky has also worked in film and television, appearing as an actor in The Fifth Element (1997) and contributing music to numerous screen productions. He published the autobiography Hell Is Round the Corner in 2019. Later releases included the EP 20, 20 and the album Fall to Pieces (both 2020), the collective project Lonely Guest (2021), and collaborations with vocalist Marta. He revisited his early catalog with Maxinquaye (Reincarnated), a 2023 expanded edition. In 2024 he formed Theis Thaws with Michael Theis, and in 2025 he released Out the Way with Marta. Different When It's Silent followed in 2026, extending a career defined by restless experimentation and an unmistakable vocal presence.
