Biography

Jennifer Jane Saunders (born July 6, 1958) is an English comedian, actress, writer, singer, impressionist, and satirist. Her career has been defined by sharp social observation, flamboyant character work, and a talent for turning the conventions of popular culture into comedy. She is best known for the television series French and Saunders and Absolutely Fabulous, both of which made her one of Britain's most influential comedy performers.

Saunders studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she met Dawn French. The two became close collaborators during the rise of alternative comedy in the early 1980s. Saunders joined the performers associated with The Comic Strip, the influential London comedy club and production group that also included Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Alexei Sayle, and Peter Richardson. She appeared in early editions of The Comic Strip Presents..., a series that helped move British comedy away from traditional variety formats toward irreverent, politically aware satire.

In 1987, Saunders and French began their BBC sketch series French and Saunders. Built around parody, character comedy, and elaborate imitations of films, musicians, television personalities, and celebrity culture, the program became a long-running showcase for both performers. Saunders was particularly noted for her ability to create outsized characters while maintaining a precise understanding of the forms she was spoofing. The partnership continued through television specials, stage performances, charity work, and later reunions.

Saunders achieved her greatest individual success with Absolutely Fabulous, which she created and wrote after developing the idea from a French and Saunders sketch. First broadcast in 1992, the sitcom centered on Edina Monsoon, a self-absorbed public relations executive whose pursuit of youth, fashion, and social relevance repeatedly collided with reality. Saunders played Edina as both ridiculous and strangely resilient, while Joanna Lumley's Patsy Stone provided an equally memorable counterpoint. The series satirized the fashion industry, celebrity obsession, advertising, consumerism, and the anxieties of middle age. It became an international cult success and returned for several series and specials through 2012.

Saunders received major recognition for Absolutely Fabulous, including a BAFTA for the program and a BAFTA Television Award for her comedy performance in 2012. In 2009, she and Dawn French jointly received the BAFTA Fellowship for their contribution to television. Saunders also earned praise for later sitcoms including Jam and Jerusalem and The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, demonstrating an interest in characters whose comic surfaces conceal insecurity, vanity, or emotional confusion.

Her screen work has extended beyond television. She appeared in films such as In the Bleak Midwinter, Muppet Treasure Island, and Spice World, and supplied the voice of the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2. She also voiced characters in Coraline, Minions, and Sing 2. In 2016, she returned to Edina Monsoon for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, which transferred the show's comic world to the big screen.

Saunders has continued to combine acting and writing in later projects, including the Netflix series The Stranger, the film Allelujah, and a guest appearance as Aunt Joan in the Amandaland Christmas special. Across her career, her work has remained notable for its combination of theatrical performance, literary wit, and affectionately ruthless satire.
