Wiki

Biography

Kelly Rowland (born February 11, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, television personality, and producer. She first became internationally known as a member of Destiny's Child, one of the most successful girl groups in popular music. After establishing herself with the group, Rowland developed a solo career that moved between contemporary R&B, pop, hip-hop, and electronic dance music, while also building a parallel career in film and television.

Rowland was born Kelendria Trene Rowland in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Houston, Texas. During her early teens, she joined the group that became Destiny's Child alongside Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Roberson. The group's first album, Destiny's Child (1998), introduced its polished vocal harmonies and R&B-driven sound. Its follow-up, The Writing's on the Wall (1999), transformed the group into a major commercial force through songs such as "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name." Rowland shared lead vocals on several of the group's recordings, helping establish the blend of individual personality and tightly arranged harmonies that became central to Destiny's Child's appeal.

The group's success continued with Survivor (2001), which produced the title track and "Bootylicious," before Rowland began pursuing solo work during a Destiny's Child hiatus. Her first solo album, Simply Deep (2002), revealed a somewhat broader palette than the group's recordings, combining R&B with pop and rock influences. Its most prominent success was "Dilemma," a collaboration with rapper Nelly that became a major international hit and topped the US Billboard Hot 100. The album also produced the widely heard singles "Stole" and "Can't Nobody." In music videos from this period, Rowland developed a visual identity separate from Destiny's Child, often emphasizing romantic drama and personal vulnerability rather than the group's coordinated performance style.

Destiny's Child returned for Destiny Fulfilled (2004), which included "Lose My Breath," "Soldier," and "Girl." The album and its supporting tour marked the group's final major chapter before its official dissolution in 2006. Rowland's second solo album, Ms. Kelly (2007), presented a more confident and club-oriented version of her sound. The singles "Like This," featuring Eve, and "Work" broadened her international profile, while the album demonstrated her growing interest in dance production and assertive pop-R&B songwriting.

That direction became especially prominent on Here I Am (2011). Working with European dance producers, including David Guetta, Rowland recorded "When Love Takes Over," "Commander," and "Down for Whatever." The songs' sleek electronic production gave her a strong presence on international dance floors, while "Motivation," featuring Lil Wayne, became one of her notable US R&B successes. Her fourth studio album, Talk a Good Game (2013), returned more directly to R&B and included collaborations with artists such as Beyonce, Michelle Williams, Wiz Khalifa, and Pharrell Williams.

Rowland has also acted in films including Freddy vs. Jason (2003), The Seat Filler (2005), and Bad Hair (2020). On television, she served as a judge on The X Factor UK and The X Factor USA, coached contestants on The Voice Australia, and hosted the series Chasing Destiny, which formed the group June's Diary. In 2025, ITV announced her as a coach on The Voice UK, adding another international talent-show role to a career that has consistently crossed the boundaries between recording artist, performer, mentor, and screen personality.
