Nicholas Edward Cave (born September 22, 1957) is an Australian singer, songwriter, musician, writer, composer and occasional actor. Best known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, he has developed one of the most distinctive bodies of work in modern rock. His deep baritone, dramatic stage presence and literary lyrics have connected post-punk aggression with blues, gospel, folk and art rock. Across five decades, Cave's work has repeatedly returned to themes of love, violence, faith, death, guilt and redemption.
Raised in Warracknabeal and Wangaratta, Victoria, Cave studied art in Melbourne before becoming involved in the city's emerging punk scene. He first gained attention with the Boys Next Door, a group that evolved into The Birthday Party. After moving to London in 1980, The Birthday Party became known for its chaotic performances, abrasive sound and increasingly dark songwriting. The band relocated to West Berlin and dissolved in 1983, but its influence on post-punk and gothic rock continued to grow.
Cave formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in 1983 with former Birthday Party members Mick Harvey and Tracy Pew, joined by Einsturzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld and other musicians. Their debut album, From Her to Eternity (1984), introduced a more expansive and atmospheric approach. Early Bad Seeds records drew heavily on blues, gospel and biblical imagery, while Cave's songs often resembled stark short stories populated by criminals, outcasts, lovers and prophets.
The band's reputation deepened with albums such as Your Funeral... My Trial (1986), Tender Prey (1988) and The Good Son (1990). The Mercy Seat, from Tender Prey, became one of Cave's defining songs, combining religious symbolism with the voice of a condemned prisoner. In the 1990s, Cave balanced violent murder ballads with increasingly intimate and piano-led songs. Murder Ballads (1996) included the widely recognized duet "Where the Wild Roses Grow" with Kylie Minogue, while The Boatman's Call (1997) emphasized restraint, melancholy and romantic disillusionment.
Cave has also maintained a substantial literary and screen career. His first novel, And the Ass Saw the Angel, was published in 1989, followed by The Death of Bunny Munro in 2009. He co-wrote the screenplay for the Australian western The Proposition (2005), which he also scored with longtime collaborator Warren Ellis. Cave and Ellis later composed music for films including The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, Lawless, Hell or High Water and Blonde.
With Ellis and other Bad Seeds, Cave formed the rawer side project Grinderman, releasing albums in 2007 and 2010. His later work with the Bad Seeds expanded into ambient, electronic and orchestral textures. Push the Sky Away (2013), Skeleton Tree (2016) and Ghosteen (2019) marked an especially reflective period, while Carnage (2021), recorded with Ellis, continued his interest in stripped-down and impressionistic songwriting. Wild God (2024) returned to a more expansive band sound, reaffirming Cave's ability to change direction without abandoning the intensity that has defined his career.
