Bryan Adams is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and photographer whose straightforward rock songs and powerful ballads made him one of the most successful recording artists of the 1980s and 1990s. Born on November 5, 1959, in Kingston, Ontario, he spent part of his childhood in Europe before his family settled in Canada. He began performing as a teenager and joined the Canadian hard rock band Sweeney Todd in the mid-1970s, briefly serving as lead vocalist.
Adams pursued a solo career while still in his teens and signed with A&M Records as both a performer and songwriter. His self-titled debut album appeared in 1980, followed by You Want It You Got It in 1981. These early releases established the guitar-led rock sound that would remain central to his work, although they did not yet give him a major international breakthrough.
That breakthrough came with Cuts Like a Knife in 1983. The album combined energetic rock tracks with polished melodic songwriting and produced the successful singles "Cuts Like a Knife," "Straight from the Heart," and "This Time." Adams' close creative partnership with songwriter Jim Vallance was central to the record's sound and to much of his subsequent success.
Adams reached a wider audience with Reckless, released in 1984. The album became a defining work of Canadian rock and included "Run to You," "Somebody," "Heaven," "Summer of '69," and "It's Only Love," a duet with Tina Turner. Reckless demonstrated Adams' ability to move between hard-edged rock, radio-friendly pop, and emotionally direct ballads without losing a recognizable musical identity.
His next album, Into the Fire, continued that approach with songs such as "Heat of the Night" and "Hearts on Fire." Adams then entered the 1990s with Waking Up the Neighbours, a large-scale production made with Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Its most famous track, "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You," was written for the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The song became an international hit and confirmed Adams' position as one of the leading writers and performers of cinematic power ballads. He also contributed prominent songs to other films, including "All for Love," recorded with Rod Stewart and Sting for The Three Musketeers, and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" from Don Juan DeMarco.
Adams maintained a substantial recording and touring career through the 1990s and 2000s with albums including 18 til I Die, On a Day Like Today, Room Service, and 11. He later explored different sides of his catalog through the acoustic Bare Bones project, the cover album Tracks of My Years, and the blues-oriented Get Up. Shine a Light, released in 2019, featured new material including a collaboration with Ed Sheeran. His 2022 releases included So Happy It Hurts, Classic, and music for Pretty Woman: The Musical. In 2025, Adams released Roll with the Punches, his first full album of new material on his own label, Bad Records.
Alongside music, Adams has established a respected career as a photographer. His portrait and fashion photography has appeared in magazines, exhibitions, and books, giving him a second creative identity separate from his work as a rock performer. Across both fields, his career has been marked by technical professionalism, strong visual presentation, and an enduring preference for concise, emotionally accessible songs.
