Kristen Anne Bell (born July 18, 1980) is an American actress, singer, producer, and occasional writer whose career has moved fluidly between stage, television, film, animation, and musical performance. Known for combining comic timing with an energetic, often emotionally candid screen presence, Bell has built a varied body of work around characters who are sharp, flawed, and frequently more complicated than their lighthearted surroundings suggest.

Bell was raised in Huntington Woods, Michigan, and developed an interest in performance at an early age. She studied musical theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts but left before graduating to pursue professional work. Her stage career began to attract attention with a Broadway appearance as Becky Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 2001, followed by a role in the 2002 revival of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. These early credits established her as a performer with both dramatic and musical abilities.

Her breakthrough came with Veronica Mars, which premiered in 2004. Created by Rob Thomas, the series cast Bell as a high school student who works as a private investigator while dealing with the social pressures and hidden conflicts of her California community. Bell's performance gave the show its distinctive balance of noir-inspired mystery, teenage drama, and dry humor. Although Veronica Mars was canceled after three seasons, the role became central to Bell's career. She returned to the character in the 2014 feature film, financed in part through a highly successful fan-backed Kickstarter campaign, and again in a 2019 revival series.

During and after Veronica Mars, Bell expanded into other television and film roles. She played Elle Bishop in the science-fiction drama Heroes and provided the voice of the anonymous narrator on Gossip Girl, a part she later reprised for the 2021 continuation. On the big screen, her performance as the title character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008 established her as a leading presence in studio comedy. She followed it with appearances in Couples Retreat, When in Rome, You Again, Burlesque, The Boss, Bad Moms, and A Bad Moms Christmas. Bell also became an important voice performer. She voiced Princess Anna in Disney's Frozen (2013), contributing to the character's comic warmth and performing several of the film's songs. Her other voice work includes the video game series Assassin's Creed, the animated musical comedy Central Park, and the children's series Do, Re & Mi.

From 2012 to 2016, Bell starred as Jeannie van der Hooven in the Showtime comedy House of Lies. She later took one of her most critically praised television roles as Eleanor Shellstrop in NBC's The Good Place, a philosophical comedy about morality, identity, and the possibility of personal change. Bell's performance anchored the show's elaborate premise with a mixture of sarcasm, physical comedy, and gradual emotional depth.

In 2024, Bell began starring in and executive producing the Netflix romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This as Joanne, an agnostic podcaster who falls in love with a rabbi played by Adam Brody. The role brought her renewed awards attention, including an Emmy nomination. The show's second season continued her work as both lead performer and producer, confirming Bell's position as a versatile entertainer whose career encompasses mainstream comedy, character-driven television, animation, and music.
