Tegan and Sara are a Canadian indie pop duo formed by identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin. Born in Calgary, Alberta, on September 19, 1980, the sisters began writing and performing music as teenagers. They first played in local punk and alternative bands before developing their own acoustic material. After winning the Calgary talent competition Garage Warz in 1998, they recorded and independently released their first album, Under Feet Like Ours, in 1999 under the name Sara and Tegan.
The album brought the duo to the attention of Neil Young, who signed them to his Vapor Records label. Their first international release, This Business of Art, appeared in 2000 and established the basic elements of their early sound: close vocal harmonies, direct songwriting, acoustic guitars, and a mixture of folk, punk, and alternative rock. If It Was You followed in 2002, expanding their arrangements while retaining the emotional immediacy that had attracted their initial audience.
Tegan and Sara reached a wider audience with So Jealous in 2004. The album introduced stronger new wave and pop influences and included "Walking with a Ghost," one of their best-known songs. The track became a breakthrough recording for the duo and was later covered by the White Stripes. Tegan and Sara also benefited from extensive touring, prominent television placements, and support slots with artists including Neil Young and the Killers. Their music videos from this period helped present them as an unusually candid and visually recognizable alternative act, with their twin identity complementing rather than overshadowing the songs.
Their next major turning point was The Con (2007), produced by Christopher Walla of Death Cab for Cutie. The album combined sharper guitars, denser arrangements, and emotionally unsettled lyrics. Songs such as "Back in Your Head" and "The Con" became central to the duo's catalog, while the album's critical reputation grew steadily after its release. Walla also produced Sainthood (2009), which continued the movement toward a more expansive and rhythmically varied indie rock sound.
In 2013, Tegan and Sara made their most decisive move toward mainstream pop with Heartthrob. Produced largely by Greg Kurstin, the album used polished synthesizers and large-scale melodies without abandoning the sisters' personal songwriting. Its single "Closer" became their highest-profile hit, and the album reached the top positions of several international charts. In 2014, they recorded "Everything Is AWESOME!!!" with the Lonely Island for The Lego Movie. The song received an Academy Award nomination and introduced the duo to an even broader audience.
Love You to Death (2016) continued their electronic pop direction. In 2017, artists including Sara Bareilles, CHVRCHES, and Hayley Williams contributed to The Con X, a charity covers project marking the tenth anniversary of The Con. The sisters later revisited their adolescence in the memoir High School (2019), accompanied by Hey, I'm Just Like You, an album reworking songs they had written as teenagers. The memoir was adapted into a television series in 2022.
Their later releases include the acoustic Still Jealous (2022), a reimagining of So Jealous, and Crybaby (2022), which returned to synth pop, new wave textures, and intensely personal lyrics. Across their career, Tegan and Sara have combined stylistic reinvention with a consistent emphasis on honesty, queer visibility, and emotional accessibility. Their work has connected indie rock, contemporary pop, and LGBTQ advocacy while establishing them as one of Canada's most enduring sibling acts.
