Moka Only is the stage name of Canadian rapper, singer, producer and illustrator Daniel Denton, born November 14, 1973, in Langford, British Columbia. Based in Vancouver for much of his career, he has been active since 1989 and is regarded as one of the most prolific figures in Canadian underground hip-hop. He has also recorded as Ron Contour, Flowtorch and Torch, using those names for different projects and stylistic directions.
Denton began in hip-hop culture as a teenager, participating in freestyle sessions, graffiti and breaking. In 1989, he joined the group Sound Advice, and in 1991 he formed Split Sphere with rapper Prevail. The pair later spent time in San Diego before returning to Vancouver. Prevail went on to establish Swollen Members with Madchild, while Denton concentrated increasingly on his own music. Moka Only helped name Swollen Members and later contributed to several of the group's most successful recordings, but his principal identity remained that of an independent solo artist.
His first album, Upcoast Relix, appeared in 1995. During the following years, he developed a distinctly do-it-yourself approach, recording and distributing cassettes by hand. Releases such as Dusty Bumps, Durable Mammal, Fall Collection and Monsterpiece established the scale of his output well before he gained wider recognition. He also worked with producer Deceo Ellipsis, formed the Nowfolk project with Ishkan, and became part of the Vancouver collective City Planners.
Moka Only's profile grew through collaborations as well as solo work. In 1999, he appeared on Len's album You Can't Stop the Bum Rush, contributing to tracks connected with the Canadian group's breakthrough period and making cameo appearances in videos for "Feelin' Alright" and "Steal My Sunshine." His own early catalog expanded rapidly around the same time, including Everyday Details, Beauty Is a Free Road and Road Life.
In 2001, he joined Battle Axe Records and released Lime Green, followed by the collaboration Code Name: Scorpion with Prevail and Abstract Rude and the solo album Moka Only Is... Ron Contour. His association with Swollen Members brought him his broadest mainstream exposure. He appeared on "Fuel Injected" and "Bring It Home," while the group's albums Bad Dreams, Monsters in the Closet and Heavy earned chart success, awards and Canadian industry recognition. Moka Only was part of the lineup on Heavy, which featured him on every track.
After leaving Swollen Members, he returned to an intensely active solo career. Albums including Flood, Lowdown Suite, The Desired Effect, Vermilion, Carrots and Eggs, Sex Money Moka and Magickal Weirdness show his range from melodic jazz rap and abstract lyricism to instrumental beat construction. He also developed recurring projects such as the Airport and Martian Xmas series, while releasing collaborative records with artists and producers including Def3, Chief, Ayatollah, Factor Chandelier and Reckognize Real.
His production style draws on jazz, funk, experimental hip-hop and unquantized rhythms. Influences cited in connection with his work include Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman and the Native Tongues movement. He has worked with artists such as J Dilla, MF DOOM, Del the Funky Homosapien, Kool Keith, Planet Asia and Billy Woods, and has produced for other rappers as well as himself.
Moka Only's extraordinary work rate reached a notable peak in 2016, when he released twelve full-length albums, one per month. He has continued issuing both new recordings and archival material, including In and of Itself, Arbutus Canyon, Many Pies and the Golden Section project Welcome to the Agrodome. His music has also remained linked to skateboarding culture through videos, collaborations and his association with Vancouver's Red Dragon and Skull Skates communities. As of 2026, his career stands as an unusually extensive body of independent Canadian hip-hop work, defined by experimentation, collaboration and sustained creative output.
