PeterLicht is the stage name of German musician and writer Meinrad Jungblut, who is associated with Cologne's indie-pop and electropop scene. His work combines electronic textures, understated pop melodies, spoken-word elements, and lyrics that move between social observation, surreal humor, and philosophical reflection. Rather than treating pop as a simple vehicle for entertainment, PeterLicht uses songs, books, essays, and theater as connected forms for examining everyday life, work, politics, technology, and consumer society.
His recording career began in 2000 with the EP 6 Lieder, released under his birth name. Soon afterward, he attracted wider attention with the single Sonnendeck. The song's unusual combination of catchy pop, electronic production, and eccentric imagery turned it into an unexpected success and established PeterLicht as a distinctive voice in German-language pop. His debut album, Vierzehn Lieder, followed in 2001, while subsequent releases expanded his sound and thematic range. Stratosphaerenlieder appeared in 2003, and Lieder vom Ende des Kapitalismus in 2006. The latter marked a particularly clear engagement with economic systems and the language of political and commercial life.
PeterLicht has always resisted the conventional demands of pop celebrity. For several years, little was publicly known about his identity, and he avoided having his face shown in photographs or on television. This deliberate distance from the usual image-making of the music industry became part of his artistic persona. The anonymity shifted attention toward the songs themselves, their language, and their deliberately unstable mixture of naivete and social criticism.
Writing is an equally important part of his career. In 2006, he published Wir werden siegen! Buch vom Ende des Kapitalismus, a hybrid work combining stories, poems, diary fragments, slogans, song lyrics, and drawings. His literary work later included Die Geschichte meiner Einschaetzung am Anfang des dritten Jahrtausends, which earned him both the 3sat Prize and the audience award at the 2007 Ingeborg Bachmann competition. He has also written columns, essays, plays, and the novel Ja okay, aber, published in 2021. In 2022, he was among the co-founders of PEN Berlin.
Theater has provided another major outlet for PeterLicht's ideas. His music first reached the stage through the 2003 project Karoshi. Tod durch Ueberarbeitung at the Muenchner Kammerspiele. Later productions used his songs and texts as the basis for new dramatic forms, including Wir werden siegen. Und das ist erst der Anfang and Raeume Raeumen. He has also reworked classical plays, including Moliere's Der Geizige and Tartuffe. His adaptation Tartuffe oder Das Schwein der Weisen was invited to the 2019 Berlin Theatertreffen.
Musically, PeterLicht continued developing his sound through albums such as Melancholie und Gesellschaft (2008), Das Ende der Beschwerde (2011), Wenn wir alle anders sind (2018), and Beton und Ibuprofen (2021). His 2024 album Alles klar revisited his recurring concerns with social crisis, uncertainty, and the difficulty of remaining human in an overloaded present. Across his work, PeterLicht remains notable for turning the language of daily life into a form of strange, questioning, and often politically alert pop.
